Nutan mania

I've decided to become a full-fledged promoter of Nutan! Below you'll find pictures of her I've collected since I've started watching films with her and  my list of her films. I hope you'll enjoy her  as much as I do!

About me

I'm a French lover of Indian cinema, but I'm also interested in literature, science, art, and reflection in general. This blog will reflect these tastes more or less!

I realise that this theme « Bollywood music » is as vast as the sea, and that wanting to speak about it in one instalment is a little presumptuous. But I won’t: there’ll be other messages, more detailed and more focussed. What I want to speak about here is the general impressions I have when listening to the music from the films. My first flash for Bolly music was Kuch kuch hota hai, which I had heard while watching the movie, and soon I bought the CD “Shah Rukh Khan, the Greatest hits”. On the CD were other super tracks (some are listed below), but that one immediately struck my ears. I was rather new to Bollywood music and films, but I so loved the tune and voice that I actually […]

This 1997 film, compared to the one I’ve spoken about previously, will be my example of what is NOT so good about Bollywood. Careful: there are many films in Bolly, but well, I’ve just seen that one again. It starts rather well, with Alok Nath, Amrish Puri as strong values, and the delightful Indian family in which Ganga (Mahima Chaudhary, in the prime of her beauty) shines like the moon in the summer sky (intentional masala metaphor ;-) (but true enough!). Then we have the sorry subplot with other rich Indian family who wanted to lay hands on Ganga; the hairy-chested, weight-lifting heir and prospective husband doesn’t reach the amusing level. His father is also something. Then the […]

I've seen this 1999 melodrama once again, and thought that it was worth a little commentary. Critics have not always appreciated it at its true worth, it seems to me: (Planet Bollywood link) and (Rediff on the Net Link) I will say why in a minute. What struck me this time is its true Bollywood touch: that mixture of romance, freshness, humour and optimism, joined with a nice story and pleasant community atmosphere. Here's the story: Roshan (Akshaye Khanna), an unemployed Indian graduate leaves his native country for the US, where he hopes to make money, just like his father had done 20 years before, but in bad temper, and died in an accident. At his arrival in NY, he finds himself by a […]

Seen from away, Kajol is the actress’s dream come true. A real talent, the recognition of the public, her marriage and family with Ajay Devgan, with whom she’s had a little girl, a promising future, what else can you ask for? Well, the answer is, a lot. Kajol is an asset that Bollywood hasn’t started to tap. At least, I hope so. Let’s look at certain facts. (I’ll focus only on the films I’ve seen). The first series is the following: Baazigar, Dil kya kare, Gupt, Raju Chacha, Hum aapke dil mein rehte hain, Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi, Ishq. I like Kajol, I appreciate her charm(s), her liveliness, her character. But frankly: can we really say this is good Bollywood? Excepting perhaps HADMRH, […]

After actresses, actors. It seems to me more difficult to speak about Bollywood actors – the men - in general than actresses, perhaps because I see more individualism and differences there. Not that actresses are all from the same mould, but being women, perhaps they have a common objective which men do not have. Okay. Well, I would like to say that some men stand out for me as being both artistically competent and positive figures, mostly in terms of their personalities, in fact. When I first started to think about them, I thought this list would be rather short. I told myself that the pressure of the Bollywood star-system was probably greater on men than on women, that the fight for […]

Ever since I discovered her, I have seen Ash as a wonder, a miracle of womanhood. Or of creation. One hears sometimes that Creation isn’t perfect, that it isn’t finished, that it’s flawed with sin and marred with injustice. Well, for once, on that face, we have it: perfection, grace, harmony. Given God’s creative powers, perhaps we should say it’s nothing very special? But this face shows this power superlatively. As with other beauties of the world, Ash gives the impression she has been given something that comes from outside this world, from a place where all is peace and luxury, order and innocence. Such is the charm of beauty that it strikes you as not ours, but only lent to us for […]

Everybody is talking about it… Or rather, was talking about it, and well, I’ve seen that movie too! It’s a good movie. In fact, very good in a non-Bollywood sense, because it’s good in terms of Western criteria: the subject, the rhythm, the acting, the unity of purpose. And very little songs and dance. The biography of a popular hero who stirs up the jealousy of wealthy and well-established magnates: a good recipe for success. Abhishek and Aishwarya play very well, master director Mani Ratnam is at one with his technique, everything is under control. We follow the conflict opposing the young self-made businessman to the older lions of the trade just as if we were watching an episode of […]

I’d like to share a few words about Abishek Bachchan. I must say he’s not my favourite actor, he’s probably not a very talented actor (as yet), but what interests me is that he’s a Bollywood phenomenon. That combination of past and future. Heritage and vitality. Let’s do him justice, nevertheless. I haven’t seen all his films, far from it (I’ve seen him in Yuva, Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Kabhi alvida naa kehna, and Kuch Na Kaho). I found him often not very good (sometimes worse than that), but one film stands out: YUVA. That was a real treat. And mostly, even if the great Mani Ratnam is behind the camera, it’s thanks to Abhishek. The other two actors (Vivek Oberoi, Ajay Devgan) do a good […]

I’m very enthusiastic about Bollywood actresses, but perhaps not for the reason you imagine. Of course today’s actresses are beautiful, charming, sexy, clever, the whole works. They’re real artists, and they’re real businesswomen! On their (not so frail) shoulders is placed a good deal of the burden of success. But let’s face it, not as much as in a Western film. Anyhow, what for me characterises the queens of Bollywood, the Preity Zintas, the Rani Mukherjees, the Aishwarya Rais, is a deep sense of availability and friendliness. I feel in them at the same time the presence of a woman and of a friend. It’s such a pleasant and rich feeling. You can fall in love with them, of course, but […]

Bollywood started for me with a selection of films shown on the French TV two years ago, and I was at first simply curious to discover a new sort of movies. One of them was Mani Ratman’s Dil se, with Manisha Koirala that literally blows up on the screen. Interestingly, I read on Imdb (http://www.imdb.com/) a review of this film that matches almost completely my own. It has been written by Tarynblake: Here it is: “This was the first actual Bollywood film I've ever seen. I knew nothing about it going in, other than that it was considered a classic and featured "that Indian guy" (Khan) who shows up in every other film. Needless to say, after I became accustomed to the singing and dancing, […]

I'm a recent Bollywood fan, and I know next to nothing about oldies! I'm sure there are treasures there, but for me they're still to be unearthed... Please if some of you have suggestions, don't hesitate! So... Best Bolly film? Why not Monsoon Wedding? In that film, I appreciated almost everything: the acting, the filming, the story, the perspective on Indian culture and practices, the humour, the realistic Delhi shots. There was next to no concessions to facile effects, and on the contrary a lot of intelligence and tact as concerns the issue of education and marriage. These questions are so often dealt with in a gross manner that it's important to note the difference here. By gross, I […]

Hi everyone, I've been a Bollywood fan for some time now, so I thought I would like to share my pleasure with you guys out there who also enjoy Bollywood films and songs. I don't know exactly what I'll do, but one idea will probably be to exchange around films, about film-makers, actors, songs, singers... well, in fact what most people do! But even though I'm a fan, I won't indulge much in glamourizing and I intend to be rather critical... Well, we'll see. Let's have fun, and share our impressions and emotions
