Yes, I think indeed your analysis corresponds to what the film tries to show.

    great post yves!

the idea what i get after seeing the movie is that the two relationship bonds i.e.,

1)The homoerotic love (which sunder has for gopal) &

2)The heterosexual/normal love (which sundar has for radha)

involves only 3 people. This became highly unstable. One had to be sacrificed to make this complicated bond stable, thus gopal committed suicide.

Hi Henrik, well, that's where I'd say Raj Kapoor always has some stuff for us in his bag; Sangam isn't an ordinary entertainer, and I half-believe (not having seen all of his movies)
that his films are that way. They entertain, but Raj Kapoor was a real artist on top of a showman, and there's always lots to look for in his films.

Thanks for taking pains to exchange!

Thanks for your reply, Yves. What i meant was that the movie *wants* to be dead-serious of course. But with a script so unrealistic, it might make no sense to discuss the plot in all details. I
wish it had even more light-hearted moments, especially from Vijayanthimala (even thought why she is lighthearted at all in her half unvoluntary marriage is another question altogether).

    Hello Henrik,

Too seriously? Well it's up to you to think so. But I don't think so myself. For me Sangam is really a serious movie, has lots of fooling around of course, but this humour and fun cannot hide the
sombre mood behind, full of anguish and doubt.

Thanks for your visit and appreciation!

Thanks for a long and interesting analysis. I feel thought that you almost take things to seriously. I agreed most to that sentence of yours: "I at first thought the film was really negligent
psychologically." To me it seemed as if the story writer just pushed his figures around trying different plot moves without bothering about realism, even more so than in other Bollywood movies of
that era and of now. Anyway, i adored Vijayanthimala. Interesting, as you noted already, that other busy blogs do not deal with Sangam. But it's true that movies with Dev Anand, Sharmila Tagore
etc. have more spice; maybe less attempted depth, too, but that's not negative.

  Hello Gita,
Thanks for your positive appreciation. I'm pleased that you enjoyed Sangam, because I believe it deserves a lot of praise, especially as it's so easy to overlook what I consider as
  esential in the movie.
cheers, yves
